Using Unicode is the best way for a Microsoft Windows Vista/XP/2000 or Linux user to read and write Malayalam. The essential steps to achieve that is described concisely below. If you are looking for more detailed tutorial please visit this blog.

[edit] To Read Malayalam
Go to Malayalam Wikipedia to see whether the reading setup is already done in your system. If you don't see correct Malayalam there, please follow instructions to install Anjali OldLipi Unicode font. For any further issues, please go thru Unicode help section.
[edit] To Write Malayalam
Goto Google's Malayalam transliteration site. Type in Manglish as you do in chat. Copy paste the Malayalam text to any site or application you choose to.
To write without connecting to internet, install Varamozhi Editor and write as per Mozhi manglish key sequence. Click File menu and select Export to UTF8 (unicode) to convert what your have written to Unicode. You can copy paste this Unicode output to any site or application.
Once you are comfortable with Mozhi way of typing, use Mozhi Keyman to type Malayalam in any site or application directly, instead of copy pasting each time.
If you prefer a Malayalam typewriter style, use Inscript enhanced with Alt keys. Inscript is a common keyboard layout for all Indic Languages.

Wiki is used for collective efforts on gathering information. Please read more about Wiki and Wikipedia here. Examples include encyclopedic information about your native place, collection of poetry by Poonthanam, Guide to travel in Kerala. Each of these can go to Malayalam Wikipedia, Malayalam Wikisource and Malayalam Wikibooks respectively.
